How to sell painted lures

3 tips to sell more custom painted fishing lures

Number 1: Stand out from the crowd! 

You have probably heard this one before, yet a lot of lure painters are painting the same patterns. It is important to stay skeptical and take a step back sometimes to assess your work. 

Ask yourself, why would anyone buy my lure and not somewhere else? If you can not give an honest and decent answer to this question. Then your lures probably are like the others. 

Find YOUR own style and combine it with trending colors. It takes a while to find your style in lure painting and what techniques you like to use. But if you do want to stand out from the crowd you will have to do things a little differently than the rest. 

How? 

• By painting ultra realistic. People like to look at their custom lures, they want something unique and that draws attention. Ultra realistic paint jobs tend to draw a lot of attention when painted on trending lures blanks.  The picture below is a good example of an ultra realist roach.

• Paint your own version of a trending lure color. Lets say a certain lure color is very trendy this year among fishermen, paint your own version of it and do not copy it. Use some brighter colors, combine it on a foil or paint it with more realism. Again, to stand out.

• Paint a hard to come by - trendy color. In some areas a specific color might become very trendy but is hard to come by in the tackle shops. Grab your chance and paint them! 

• Stand out with the blank. Sometimes the paint job is only secondary and the blank is what makes you stand out. Give these a simple, quick to paint, but well known color and sell them at a good price!   

A classic saying, but it is still very true, and also applies to lure making/painting. The faster you can paint up your blanks, the less time spent, the cheaper you can sell. 

Now do not sell yourself short here! It is not about being cheap. Remember that someone willing to buy a custom painted lure is willing to pay the price. If that person wants a cheap lure then they will buy them on certain websites we all know of. Even if it is just a hobby, there is no use in selling lures so cheap that you would make a loss on it, while spending much time on it.

Here are some pointers to make your painting process go faster go faster.

• Stencils. Make custom stencils that ensure you to shoot a nice pattern in single shot. This saves time by creating nice patterns on your lures in one shot of paint. 

• Less colors is more time. Create patterns that have as few colors as possible. Finding the balance between a cool looking and unique pattern and using as few colors as possible is probably the most difficult thing. But we have to be honest here, changing colors in your airbrush takes time! Unless of course you own several airbrushes and use one color with each brush at the same time. The lure in the picture below is painted with minimal use of different colors. Simple color patterns do can look very good! Starting from a pre-foiled blank like I did in this case can be a real time saver too.

 

• Paint more lures at once. If you want to save time, paint up a whole batch at once. This way you will be saving a lot of time.

Number 3:  Product presentation

More and more people start to paint lures and sell these online. On social media, a website or even on youtube. So when we talk about product presentation on the internet, we are talking about product photography of your lures. 

This is a whole different and separate subject when we are talking about selling fishing lures. But nonetheless it is becoming more and more important! 

Do not use a noisy background. A background with a lot of stuff,colors or things lying around will distract a person very quickly and take the focus off your lure. You want the focus to be on your lures and nothing else.

Simply use a wall, table, or even a sheet of paper as a background. These colors are more neutral and do not steal away the attention.

You can also get a bit more creative - and again, stand out from the crowd. In this case I created a nice background with just a black painted piece of cardboard and a piece of wood.
